Scientific Research Meets Upscale Art Gallery

SAN FRANCISCO—A Rorschach test or an illusion print? What you see depends on how you look at it. For years, Paul Millman, vice president of sales for Chroma Technology, looked at the microscopic images created for research by some of the world’s top scientists and saw the art before he saw the science. The artistic implications inspired the idea for an upscale art exhibit of scientific images.

Titled microMODERN – an exhibit of art in science, the show at the LIMN Gallery will feature works contributed by many top researchers from around the world. Most of the images are obtained via CCD camera showing fluorescence microscopy, however, for this event they will be enlarged and presented in a variety of mediums to mimic fine art.

microMODERN opens at the gallery on Thursday, Dec. 11, and runs through Saturday, Dec. 20. The opening reception is Sunday, Dec. 14, from 7:30 to 10 pm and is free and open to the public. Proceeds from the sale of the art will benefit the San Francisco AIDS Foundation.

Founded in 1982, the San Francisco AIDS Foundation is a global leader in the fight to end the pandemic and the human suffering caused by HIV/AIDS. The foundation provides such critical services as client advocacy, housing assistance, financial benefits counseling, and a treatment adherence program. It also runs the California HIV/AIDS Hotline, provides HIV prevention education, and treatment information to people living with HIV/AIDS in the San Francisco Bay Area. For more information, please visit www.sfaf.org.

The microMODERN exhibit is made possible by contributions from Applied Precision, Carl Zeiss, Inc., Cell, Fish & Richardson P.C., HowellMartin Marketing & Advertisting, Molecular Probes, Nikon Instruments Inc., Olympus, and Viacom Outdoor.
